James focuses on bold, large-scale images with unconventional colors and textured backgrounds.
James lives and paints in his hometown of Washington, DC. His grandmother was a professional painter, and, as a child, James loved poking around in her studio. However, he never pursued any formal artistic training. James holds degrees in political science, law, and business, but with regard to painting, he is entirely self-taught.
James began sketching in 2002, and soon began to dabble in painting. He did not seriously commit to oil painting until 2014, when his wife asked him to paint a large mural for their hallway. He discovered that he loved the uncertainty and endless possibilities of working in that medium, and has been a passionate oil painter ever since. His output accelerated during quarantine, and, even with the gradual return to a more normal pattern of life, James has continued to paint. As his inventory of paintings keeps growing, James has launched this website so that other people may enjoy his work.
